Different Impacts on Business Industries Due to the Pandemic

Owning and managing businesses have become more difficult than ever before due to the pandemic that currently affects and has previously shut down the whole world.

It is already extremely difficult to run a business so many factors and responsibilities fall in the hands of business owners, to become successful — or even just to stay open owners must fill gaps within the company by whatever means necessary to stay afloat. Justin Ennis has owned and operated his own service company Allstar Carpet Care in Sonoma county California for the past 25 years. Within the last two years he’s added to his resume by joining Valley Pacific Petroleum where he’s now the relations manager for all Sales in the Northern Bay Area.

Ennis reflected on his own experiences as a business owner which helped us answer the question: How has the Corona Virus Pandemic affected different industries in business?

What side of business was hit harder by the Pandemic?

Excluding family-owned businesses, the service side of business has been hit the hardest, restaurants and saloons have been closed for nearly a year and the ones that do manage to stay open are at a greatly reduced capacity or take-out only. This greatly lowers tips for the workers, most of which depend on for bills.

What does essential business mean to you?

Essential business to me means people NEED to go there on a daily basis to perform daily operations and needs. Places like grocery stores, pharmacies, dispensaries, supermarkets, fast food. However, if everything is managed properly and precautions are taken there is no need to keep businesses closed. It’s up to the business owner to maintain safety precautions.

What has been your personal experience between the two companies through the pandemic?

Allstar carpet care halted originally, but as the lockdown grew longer and restrictions lifted it slowly climbed and maintained a slower than normal pace, even for slow season it was slow. It is a service job that requires going to people’s home. With valley pacific petroleum I hardly deal with people, the people I do deal with are essential workers in trucking, mechanics and farming. My company supplies oil and gasoline and other engine products to these companies. Other than my office moving to my living room couch nothing changed.

What do you imagine the recovery processes of the economy to look like?

Well, that’s a really difficult question there Colton. The pandemic taught us that we don’t need a lot of jobs, and most of the jobs we do need, we’ve see they can be done at home. Companies might see this as another way to save money and therefore keep workers at home from now on and compensate other ways. It’s really unfortunate that the possibility of greedy business owners could stunt the growth of relationships.

After talking to Justin Ennis, we were able to view the changes in the economy through the lens of a leader in business. The pandemic has made us question so many things and left us with minimal answers. What we do know is the world has changed, the economy is in limbo and masks are a daily essential. Additionally, service jobs, brick and mortar and mom and pop shops are on the verge of long-lasting change.
